Former Off the Ball presenter and Wexford Hurler Diarmuid Lyng has founded a campaign which is encouraging social media users to opt out of the digital world for the month of February.

Diarmuid explains the concept:

"It's based around the idea of pressing pause on your relationship with social media. While it's called Facebook Free February, it's not only switching off from Facebook for a month, cold turkey. The idea is to press pause and change some aspect of your behaviour with social media, if that is something you need to do."

Having listened to Diarmuid speaking with Pat Kenny this morning, it got me thinking. How much time do I spend on Facebook, and could I shut myself away from it for a month?I have been using an app called "Checky" for the last six days which monitors how many times I unlock my phone screen. On my third day of using the app, which was a Friday, I checked my phone 233 times. Think about that - 233.

This shocked me. If you had asked me, I would say maybe 30 times a day.

While I clearly check my phone a lot, I wouldn't have thought I spend that much time on social media and so I'm going to test myself. I spoke with Diarmuid and have agreed to take part in Facebook Free February. Rather than going cold turkey, I'm just going to row back. I will be off for the first and third weeks of February. If I can.

Do you want to take part? You'll find more information here.
