A Fianna Fáil Senator has revealed she lived in a Mother and Baby home for a time, and her birth mother was forced to give her up for adoption.

Averil Power says her birth mother fell pregnant out of marriage and was put into the Temple Hill mother and baby home in Dublin in 1978.

In 2007, she eventually managed to get in touch with her birth mother when she signed up to a new voluntary contact register for adopted children.

She told Newstalk's Pat Kenny show (being presented this week by David McWilliams) why the government needs to introduce legislation so that adopted people can get access to their birth certificate:
