Gardaí say they are treating the death of a woman in Co Louth yesterday as murder.

Marie Quigley was found dead with serious head injuries at the family home in Rathmore near Hackballscross yesterday afternoon.

It happened just hours after her husband died in a crash, after driving the wrong way on the M1 motorway, and collided with a truck and a car. Three other people were injured.

The couple's four children are requesting privacy to grieve their parents.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Tomás Sharkey says the three people injured in the crash on the M1 are expected to make a full recovery:

Gardaí investigating the fatal crash traced the vehicle to a house in Rathmore near Hackballscross, where the body of a woman was found. The woman was named locally as Marie Quigley, wife of Jim.

Gardaí are investigating how the incidents are linked.

Parish priest of Kilkerly, Gerry Campbell, told Shane Coleman on the Pat Kenny Show that the community is numb.

Post mortem examinations are being carried out at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, but it is understood that gardaí are investigating the matter as a murder-suicide.

Journalist Elaine Keogh spoke to Newstalk Breakfast earlier.
