More than 7,500 motorists are driving on roads while banned, new figures suggest.
Road Safety Authority (RSA) statistics suggest banned drivers are responsible for killing between 11 and 14 people on Irish roads each year, The Irish Times reports.
The Government is being urged to give Gardaí the technology they need to clamp down on the problem.
Conor Faughnan of AA Ireland told The Pat Kenny Show that the problem is a significant concern.
He explained: "What we should have is a single converged database, so that any guard, any time when they stop a car they can see whether that car is insured, who's insured to drive it, whether it's taxed, whether it's NCT compliant.
"The driver's license should call up immediately information on the driver himself - whether they've got penalty points, whether they're serving a suspension. At the moment we're asking the Gardaí to use what is early 20th century technology to police a 21st century problem," he added.
