On Monday of this week, 350 people were summoned for jury duty at Ennis circuit court, however just 75 of that 350 turned up.
Speaking on the subject, Judge Gerald Keyes said “The system would collapse if we didn’t have juries."
As jury service is a civic duty, failing to attend for jury service without reasonable excuse, or not being available when called upon to serve as a juror is punishable by a €500 fine.
However, why are citizens are neglecting this civic obligation? What would become of the jury system if this pattern were to continue? And is there a need to reform the jury system?
