One man has died, more than 500,000 people have been urged to evacuate and hundreds of flights are cancelled as a powerful typhoon hits Japan.
Torrential rain and winds of 250 kilometres per hour are lashing the Okinawa island chain to the south west of the country, despite the storm being downgraded from its original status as a super typhoon.
The storm is expected to hit Toyko later this week.
