One of the institutions behind plans for a new course - which will allow teachers to teach at both Primary and Secondary level - is defending the initiative.
Trinity College, UCD, Marino Institute and NCAD are proposing a merger of their training courses into one centre.
Students would still choose between Primary and Secondary teaching, but they could also have the option of a module to span the “transition” between both sectors.
Teachers unions are likely to oppose the move.
But The Marino Institute'Â’s Registrar, Sean Delaney, told Newstalk's Pat Kenny show the plans would not damage the status of teachers. He says those who are proposing the changes want to work with the unions to reach agreement:
