The mother of a woman murdered by her own husband has hit out at the fact he's entitled to an allowance while behind bars.
Over €8 million was spent by the Department of Justice on pocket money for offenders between 2012 and 2014.
Convicts can then convert the allowance in their prison account to money on their release, meaning for example somebody serving a 15 year sentence could walk out of prison with €12,000 nest egg.
A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service said payment rates are linked to a prisoner’s “level of engagement with services and quality of behaviour”.
