The Taoiseach says he would prefer if Government Ministers aired their view at the cabinet table rather than raise them in public.
The comments from Enda Kenny in Brussels this afternoon can only be viewed as a direct criticism of Leo Varadkar and Joan Burton who both called yesterday on the Garda Commissioner to withdraw remarks made about whistleblowers Sergeant Maurice McCabe and John Wilson.
However Mr. Kenny is stressing that he does not want Ministers to be restricted.
But the row over the 'disgusting' comment made by Commissioner Callinan could be about to cause a deeper division around the cabinet table.
Group Political Editor with the Irish Independent Fionnan Sheehan says Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore is siding with Minister's Varadkar and Burton.
"Miss Burton is understood to have tick-tacked with Mr. Gilmore's office yesterday evening before commenting on this issue - and generally speaking, sources in the Labour Party are saying that she is speaking for the party - she's not on a solo run here - and that the Tanaiste concurs with that view and (is) planning to make some comment upon this issue" he said.
"But he's ill, he can't do that - but the word coming out from the Labour camp is...he's onboard too" he added.
The wife of whistleblower John Wilson said earlier he was "delighted" with the support of a number of Cabinet Ministers.
John Wilson is currently recovering in hospital after surgery for bowel cancer.
His wife Ann told the Pat Kenny Show here on Newstalk earlier that John's health is the priority now, and they are expecting the results of his latest biopsy next week.
