The Dáil has voted down Clare Daly's bill, to allow abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality, by 104 votes to 20.
Anne Ferris supported the bill and will be expelled from the Labour parliamentary party.
However she was the only Labour TD to vote against the government on the bill.
The proposals from Clare Daly would have allowed for abortion when a fatal foetal abnormality has been diagnosed.
The government was advised that the bill is unconstitutional, which Ms Daly strongly disagreed with.
Ms Ferris had said she would like to have seen the bill progress to committee stage, so that its provisions can be examined by legal and medical experts.
Minister Brendan Howlin earlier today appealed to Labour TDs considering voting in favour of the bill to stick to the party line:
But Tánaiste Joan Burton said the bill would be in breach of the Constitution and therefore the Dáil cannot pass it.
