The Master of the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin says she doesn't think the High Court is the right place for cases involving children born with Cerebral Palsy.
Around half of the total value of settlements in litigation in Ireland are paid out in obstetrics.
"The risks are high. You're talking about two lives in your care. The responsibilities are enormous.
"50% or more of the entire quantum of settlements in litigation in this country are paid out in obstetrics.
Rhona Mahony says that's largely explained by Cerebral Palsy, which is caused by many complex issues that have to be examined in detail in court in litigation cases.
Dr Mahony says parents should not have to go through a lengthy High Court battle when she joined Pat Kenny today to discuss the achievements and challenges facing the Maternity Hospital and also a look ahead to the future.
