What is life like for those working in and receiving treatment at Ireland’s regional hospitals? That’s the question we asked on The Pat Kenny Show earlier this year.
With three reports from around the country, and a special medical panel Friday Forum discussion to finish the week, we examined life at hospitals across Ireland, including reports from Waterford, Drogheda and Roscommon.
INTERACTIVE: Where are overcrowding and waiting lists the worst in Ireland?
For the third report we travelled to Roscommon and Galway - hearing the personal stories behind failures in the ambulance service and in psychiatric care in the west of Ireland.
Newstalk reporter Richard Chambers has been to Roscommon and Ballinalsoe, and reported on:
- How one seriously ill patient was left waiting over three hours for an ambulance, despite living next door to an ambulance depot
- Serious physical attacks on staff in psychiatric healthcare facilities, despite warnings of potential dangers from particular patients
- The knock-on effects of the closure of Roscommon County Hospital's psychiatric department
- An ambulance service stretched beyond its limits
