In the battle for box office domination, Warner Bros and DC are still lagging behind Marvel and Disney when it comes to big-screen adaptations of beloved comic book characters. While still bringing in enough money to turn big profits, the critical drubbing of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad has left many looking to Wonder Woman as the franchise’s hail Mary pass.
Warner Bros will bring Diana Prince to the global box office in June, releasing the first female-led superhero movie since 2005’s Elektra, a movie so bad you forget it existed. And now the studio has released a new trailer that teases the origin story of arguably the world’s most famous superheroine.
Although Israeli actress Gal Gadot already surfaced as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman last year, her forthcoming film will see the action jump back in time a century to the battlefields of the First World War. Somehow, the experience will lead to her sticking around long enough without ageing much by the time Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent become frenemies, but the new trailer gives us our first ever look at the childhood Diana training with the rest of the Amazons on the island paradise of Themyscira.
There is a lot of weight on Wonder Woman’s shoulders, with the positive reaction to the footage seen in the trailers undercut by online chatter claiming that a DC insider has claimed the film suffers from the same disjointed narrative flow that has dogged all of the DC films thus far. Viewers will have to wait until June 2nd to make up their own minds.
