This week’s guest for Back to Mine was Portishead instrumentalist Geoff Barrow.
Portishead are one of the headlining acts at this year’s Electric Picnic. They have recently issued a 20th anniversary edition of their debut album Dummy.
“The craziest thing is we’re playing bigger shows now than we did with our first two albums,” he said. “Some kind of connection has happened”.
Barrow’s first song choice on the show was Fight the Power by Public Enemy.
“Public Enemy were my Punk,” he said.
He first encountered this song when he attended an alcohol-free under-18s nightclub.
“It made me want to sit down and I thought ‘OK, my life is going to take a different path now”.
For his second pick he chose Vitamin C by Can.
“Can have been the band that have influenced me through most of my life,” he explained. “This band is incredibly special for me”.
Finally, Barrow chose Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell as his last song pick.
“I sing it in the car with the kids and the dog,” he said. “It’s very sad, lyrically. It’s just an amazing song...one of the greatest”.
