Johnny Marr, former guitarist with The Smyths, joined Tom for this week’s ‘Back to Mine’.
After his first solo album ‘The Messenger’, from 2013, Marr is set to release his latest in October of this year.
Tom began by asking him about the challenges inherent in backing up the success of a first album.
“I like the second album syndrome,” he said. “In the Smyths days ‘Meat is Murder’ was our second album and that did very well…”
Marr chose ‘Shot by Both Sides’ by Magazine as his first song choice.
“It makes me proud that they were a Manchester band...it’s a proper bone fide, proper punk rock single,” he said of his song choice.
‘Midnight Rider’ by Paul Davidson made up Marr’s second song choice.
“This was a hit when I was a kid, it has always just stuck with me...if I was pressed I would probably say it's maybe my favourite guitar solo of all time”.
Finally, Marr chose ‘The Passenger’ by Iggy Pop as his third song pick.
