This week Tom had the opportunity to meet one of Motown’s legends, Martha Reeves.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of "Dancin’ in the Street," Martha Reeves and The Vandellas embarked on a worldwide tour, called ‘Calling Out Around the World Tour 2014’.

Martha and the Vandellas became famous in the 60’s with a string of hit singles on Motown’s Gordy Label.  The group were behind some of the most enduring pop songs of modern times, such as (Love is Like a) Heatwave, Nowhere to Run and Jimmy Mack.

During the interview Reeves reminisced about starting out as a backing singer for Marvin Gaye. “When we looked at Marvin he was like a guy in disguise. He would wear a hat on his head, sunglasses, a pipe in his mouth - you couldn’t tell how fine he really was. When we got in the studio we had to sing on the same mic, we had to get right behind him. When we looked at him we all knew that we loved Marvin Gaye...God, what a good looking man he was,” she said.

One of the legendary aspects of Reeves career is her association with Motown. “It’s a real thrill to be at a company with so many talented people,” she said. “I’m still overwhelmed by the business”.

Ms Reeves was in Dublin to perform at The Button Factory, so Tom caught up with her for a pint of Guinness before the show.
