On tonight's show Oisin Davis recreates the Rob Roy cocktail from 'Angels Over Broadway', the 1940 classic film starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Rita Hayworth.
Oisin says, “As we all know, the Scottish are a proud race. They may have well been scaredy cats when it came to voting for independence, but they're a proud lot nonetheless. In late 19th century NY, the locals were absolutely hot to trot for a concoction doing the rounds called the Manhattan. It was comprised of American Rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and a healthy dash of bitters. Yet a certain ethnic minority on the East Coast weren't too happy serving up this cocktail when they could have been using their own whiskey. They were the Scots and they wanted their version of this cocktail. And that's how the Rob Roy came into being, named after one of their great national revolutionaries. How Mr. Roy would feel about his beloved people not voting for independence is another matter, best not discussed over hard liquor.
