This week our resident mixologist Oisin Davis (of the Damson Diner) is recreating the Old Fashioned from the 1950 classic, 'Father of the Bride', starring Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracey.
Oisin says, "most people in Ireland know how to make a couple of dishes of food. And they know how to pour a proper pint. But why is it that so few of us know how to make cocktails? I find that a bit mad considering that we make one of the finest spirits on the planet, Irish Whiskey!"
He continues, "the Old Fashioned cocktail is really easy to make and works exceptionally well with Powers Whiskey. It's a simple mix of liquor, sugar and Angostura Bitters. The last ingredient is like a liquid spicy seasoning and makes the whiskey sing!".
"This is the cocktail of choice for Don Draper, the star of Mad Men that so many ladies lust after. Now it wouldn't be fair to say that if the lads of Ireland knew how to mix this drink then they too would be as equally appealing to the fairer sex, but it's worth a shot".
This is what you will need to make the perfect Old Fashioned...
INGREDIENTS:
60 ml of Powers Gold Label Whiskey
1 sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon of sugar
2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitters
1 orange twist (use a potato peeler and cut off a bit of orange peel
that's about 3 inches long)
METHOD:
Place the sugar into a tumbler glass.
Splash the Angostura Bitters into the sugar along with a teaspoon of water.
Muddle the bitters and water with a bar spoon or stick until it's all combined into a spicy, sweet paste of deliciousness.
Rotate the glass so that the paste coats as much of the glass as possible. This will ensure the cocktail is easier to mix and combine and is well balanced.
Then you lob in the whiskey and some ice and stir it all up until it combines.
Smear the zest side of the orange peel all round the rim of the glass and then place it into the glass.
Sláinte!
