This week our resident mixologist Oisin Davis (of the Damson Diner) is recreating the Gimlet cocktail from the 1952 classic, 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro', which stars Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck.
Oisin says, "The author Raymond Chandler made the Gimlet cocktail famous in his 1953 book, The Long Goodbye. The book's hero, Phillip Marlowe, is quite fond of them, but considering Chandler's love of bourbon, it's odd that he should feature his character drinking anything else than a dark spirit. Lots of people reckon that the cocktail is from that era but it dates back further to London in the 19th century when Rose's Lime Juice from Scotland was a popular cordial. It's one of those drinks that's really difficult to get wrong as it just contains gin, Rose's Lime Juice and fresh lime juice”.
If you would like to make the Gimlet, here is what you will need...
INGREDIENTS:
50 ml Beefeater 24 Gin
15 ml Rose's Lime Juice
5 ml freshly squeezed lime juice
METHOD:
Chill a martini glass with some ice, remove the ice right before
pouring. Shake all ingredients in a shaker with some ice and fine
strain into the glass. Garnish with a slice of lime.
