This week Tom brought Scottish crime author Ian Rankin 'Back to Mine'.

In his most recent book, Saints of the Shadow Bible, Ian has found a way to bring his much loved and long running detective character John Rebus out of retirement.

Ian says: "He retired for the best part of five years and I went off and did other things but he was just niggling away. It was almost like he was just trapped in a little room inside my head and he just kept kicking at the door."

Ian also talked about his love of music and his record collection.

"The first LP I bought would have been in 1972 or 1973. It probably would have been T-Rex or something of that ilk. I still buy a lot of vinyl. There's a Scottish band called Boards of Canada, they're kind of electronica. They re-released their first albums on vinyl so I had to have all of those even though I have them on CD.

"It's gotten to the stage that if I buy vinyl I have to hide them at the back door. I check that the coast is clear, that my wife isn't in, and then I go and stuff them into the racks before she can see them."

Ian spoke about the influence of punk on his career.

"Punk was a huge influence to the extent that it said you don't need a musical education, you don't need to have gone to the right schools, you don't need to be able to afford lots of expensive equipment - just get onstage and do it. There was a bit of that about being a writer. It didn't matter that I didn't know anybody that was a writer, it didn't matter that I didn't know any publishers. Punk said just get on and try it, give it a go. I joined a punk band for about a year as a vocalist. I was dreadful but I gave it a go. Punk said you can do it."

Ian chose to play Sinner Boy by Rory Gallager and Teenage Kicks by the Undertones.

You can hear why he chose those tracks, and listen to the full interview here.
