"There's a Jewish humour that I love and a New York humour that I love, and then I'd be thinking 'what is it about the Dublin humour that's distinctive or idiosyncratic?"
This is the question that was floating around Peter Sheridan's mind when he was devising his new show, Are You Havin' a Laugh, which premieres at Bewleys Cafe Theatre tomorrow.
The writer, director and playwright joined Tom Dunne on Tuesday evening to discuss his interest in the evolution of the city's sense of humour.
During the interview, Sheridan highlighted the fact that a lot of the patterns and quirks of the Irish language have passed through to the way we speak English.
"I started thinking about the Irish language," he explained. "The idea of the language filtering through, so in fact we're thinking in Gaelic but speaking in English".
