Thursday night is movie night on The Tom Dunne Show, but tonight's show was under a dark cloud following the news that George Byrne, resident film critic on Tom's shows at Newstalk for many years, had passed away following a short illness.

Fionn Davenport was in for Tom tonight and said:

"The whole team are understandably devastated and they want to extend their deepest sympathy to George's Family, his friends, who include Tom, who was friends with him for 30 years ... and also to all of those who read him in the Herald and listened to him here on The Tom Dunne Show.

"Whatever you thought about his opinions he was never afraid of letting us know what he really thought about a film, or an album, or his beloved Shamrock Rovers. He also spoke his mind and he will be terribly missed."

Fionn was joined by entertainment journalist Rory Cashin and Oisín Davis of Great Irish Beverages, who also shared their memories of George.
