During her touring commitments in Ireland this summer, St Vincent (Annie Clarke) sat down with Newstalk’s Tom Dunne to discuss life while touring, working with David Byrnes’ genius, and leaving Berkeley to pursue a more independent approach to a music career.
Following some well received dates at the Iveagh Gardens, Live at the Marquee, speaking ahead of her show at the Big Top in Galway. Touring seems to be a constant in the 32-year-old's life. In the past, Clark has kept a place in Sufjan Stevens' band, some time in the Polyphonic Spree, and most recently curating mixtapes for fans with an hour-long radio show on Apple Music’s Beats 1
After a long night of travelling, Tom asked how she felt ahead of her shows during the week, “Sometimes you get lost in the jaws of Heathrow and that’s what happened last night” the ‘Digital Witness’ artist replied. “I feel like Heathrow is my home away from home, and it is not a home I prefer.” A “remarkably chipper” Clarke said that her reason for being so was, ”I’ in Ireland! I’m happy!”
Speaking to Tom about working with David Byrne, the art rocker said; “I love David. He’s another genius. It sounds like I am throwing this word around willy-nilly. He’s a genius, a polymath,he is so fun, so funny, and has the most buoyant, effervescent spirit I have ever encountered.”
