Many music fans first heard of Daniel Johnston when Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt promoting the album Hi How are You in the early 90s.

Cobain's endorsement was a turning point in Daniel's career.  Until this point he was known only for handing out his own individually hand-made cassette tapes to fans and friends.

Daniel was also the subject of the 2006 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston which documented his struggle with mental illness.

From tales of madness in mental institutions and plane crashes to MTV appearances, Daniel Johnston has spent the last 30 or so years sharing his brutally honest tales to an ever-growing international cult audience.  Matt Groening and David Bowie are amongst the celebrity names who count themselves as Johnston fans.

Adrian Crowley and James Yorkston have released an album interpreting some of their favourite Daniel Johnston tracks.  They joined Tom and talked about why they made the album.
