Coming up on the show tonight, Tom will be joined by music journalist Jenn Gannon to talk about the times when music critics get it wrong.
These days, it seems that album reviews appear in multitudes, breaking new releases down in terms of cultural context, aesthetic and all the rest - before enough time has even passed to listen to the whole thing. Both Beyonce's Lemonade and Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool have suffered this fate in recent weeks.
Even in the past, when critics had the time to analyse and digest new albums before they were released, they often got it wrong, and their impression of the album did not reflect the public's reception. Both the Sex Pistols and the Ramones suffered this fate with their debut releases at the beginning of the punk movement.
On the other hand, sometimes an album is heralded as the best thing since sliced bread, based on the hype and anticipation surrounding it's release. Only time tells whether or not the music leaves a lasting impression.
So is the new Radiohead album so good that it's clear as day from the first listen, or was Noel Gallagher right when he said that "if Thom Yorke fucking shit into a light bulb and started blowing it like an empty beer bottle it’d probably get 9 out of 10".
Cian Nugent will also be joining Tom on tonight's show. His album Night Fiction was released at the beginning of this year, and around that time he came in and recorded a session with us. Tonight, he's back in studio with a selection of songs from his record collection to talk us through.
Cian Nugent & special guests Nap Eyes play Whelans in Dublin this Thursday the 12th of May. Tickets are €10, available online from WAV Tickets or Lo-Call 1890 200 078.
