Wilko Johnson, best known for his work with punk pioneers Dr. Feelgood, joined Tom Dunne on Tuesday night ahead of his upcoming Irish date.
Two yesrs ago the guitarist was diagnosed with terminal cancer but has since made a miraculous recovery. Julian Temple has charted this transformation in his film The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson.
"It really was a most extraordinary year," says Johnson. "You think your life is going to end and the way I dealt with it was to accept that this is so. I thought 'Right, Ill just carry on as long as I can'".
Deciding to discontinue the treatment, Johnson made a concerted effort to embrace the last months of his life.
"The first thing I did was I went to Japan. I wanted to go and say goodbye to my friends and I wanted to see these beautiful places once aghain. And it was good".
Eventually the doctors decided to remove the tumour in Johnson's pancreas. It was a 3 kilogram tumor and the operation took 11 hours. But he is well as a result and, remarkably, plays the Academy, Dublin, on Friday May 29th.
