Wexford boss Davy Fitzgerald wouldn't be drawn on the war of words between Wexford GAA and Clare GAA following his side's defeat to Kilkenny.

The Model County lost the Allianz National Hurling League Division 1 Group B game by 2-23 to 27 points at Nowlan Park, a match which was rearranged for Sunday.

The game was originally postponed on Saturday May 22nd after a third Wexford player tested positive for Covid-19, days after two Wexford players received positive tests.

Clare, who played Wexford on May 19th, were caught up in the issue as two of their players were deemed close contacts by the HSE.

Clare manager Brian Lohan said these players were identified by Wexford players, a claim Wexford chairman Micheál Martin described as 'outrageous' and 'factually incorrect'. Clare GAA subsequently backed Lohan's version of events.

A former Clare manager himself, Davy Fitzgerald told KCLR that he only wants to concentrate on hurling.

"Listen, as we've said in Wexford - the HSE do their job and we do ours. We've no excuses here in Wexford. It's important we stick to hurling and not side issues. That's all I am interested in and the Wexford lads - that's all we're interested in.

"At the end of the day, we're here to play hurling," he added. "We got well beaten today. We take our beating gracefully. We know the better team won, we've no excuses, so that's the way it is. Any other sideshows - we've no interest - we'll just do the hurling side of things - and let other professionals do what they're good at doing."

Davy Fitzgerald was also asked about the return of fans to stadiums and he is hopeful normality can be restored soon.

"I want just to see a few people getting into a few games. As far as I am aware there is very little transmission when you are out in the open. We have massive stadiums, if we can do it smartly. I was looking at the news last night and I saw a Longford match - a supporter - and how much it meant to him to just go to the game and see it.

"This place is well capable of taking maybe 20 thousand plus. I am not saying we are going to be right back, but I really think there is a case in these type of grounds we can get people into them and just be smart. We need the supporters in the game, it's great for us to play - but we need the supporters in the game, 110 percent."
