The premiere of new song Survival, featuring Liz Rodrigues, in a Call of Duty: Ghosts trailer is the natural culmination of the relationship between the rapper and the extraordinarily popular video game series. Three previous CoD games have also seen Eminem tracks included in the game or the associated trailers, but Survival is the highest-profile collaboration yet.
Survival will appear on Eminem’s currently untitled eighth studio album, while Call of Duty: Ghosts - the 10th major release in the series, alongside numerous spin-offs - is due out in November.
2013 has seen a number of musicians experiment with new ways of premiering their latest material. The brief clips of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky played during episodes of Saturday Night Live sent fans into near hysteria, with the teasers attracting millions of views online. The hype campaign worked: the full song, as you’re no doubt aware, went on to be the best selling track of the year so far.
Even more novel were Kanye’s West efforts during the highly secretive promotional campaign for his album Yeezus. Most intriguingly, West and his marketing team projected a video for the song New Slaves on buildings in various cities around the world. The stunt attracted even more attention when police in Houston shut down screenings at several local landmark buildings.
