Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson has dropped out of the Official World Golf Ranking's Top 100 for the first time in 28 years.

When the new rankings were released on Monday the 50-year-old was placed at 101, bringing his record 1,425 weeks streak to an end.

From an Irish perspective there was disappointment with Rory McIlory's three-year stay in the top ten coming to an end as he was replaced by Bryson DeChambeau who clinched the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday evening.

It has been quite a drop for the Ulsterman who was the number one golfer in the world only last June.

Fellow Irishman Shane Lowry remains at number 40.

Mickelson, who has won the Masters three times as well as one PGA Championship and one Open Championship, first broke into the Top 100 in August 1993 after he won The International.

It was a speedy ascent after he entered the rankings at number 580 following his 19th place finish at the 1990 Northern Telecom Open.

Mickelson's hopes of becoming the world's number one were always scuppered by Tiger Woods who was number one when he was number two for an incredibly long 270 weeks.

As well as the five majors, Mickelson has 44 PGA Tour victories to his name which places him ninth on the all-time list.

This year the San Diego native has missed two cuts in the three events that he has played and he was tied for 53rd at the Farmers Insurnace Open.
