Nearly 600 drivers have been caught speeding through a roads policing operation being conducted over the course of the bank holiday weekend.
The Garda operation began at 7.00am on Thursday, 30th of January, and will continue until 7.00am on Tuesday, 4th of February.
According to Gardaí, "in excess of 580 drivers" were caught speeding during the first 48 hours of the operation.
There were also three fatalities on the road during this period, bringing the total number of fatalities on Irish roads this year to 14.
A further 63 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
These figures are in spite of there being a reduced number of motorists using the roads, while communities continue to deal with the effects of Storm Éowyn.
Most dangerous time
Gardaí have urged the public to use the roads with care over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The risk of a fatal or serious injury road traffic collision is at its highest between midday and 3pm on each of the four days of the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday Weekend.
Drivers and all other road users are being reminded to plan ahead and organise a safe way home if socialising over the coming days.
