Debut albums don’t come more anticipated than the Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m not. Due to file sharing on the Internet it was an album that had been longed for by the music industry and fans. It remains to this day the fastest selling debut album by a band ever.
The album details the life of young party goers in Northern England with the words sung by the Arctic’s acerbic frontman Alex Turner. It’s an album that sounds like the creative grandchild of the punk movement with abrasive guitars and smart sharp lyrics.
It also contains possibly one of the best rock songs of the last 25 years….
Of course there’s a grand old tradition of music and words from Northern England. Many people hearing the album for the first time couldn't help but be reminded of performance poet John Cooper Clarke...
So if anyone’s currently enjoying the Arctic Monkeys’ latest release ‘AM’ then why not listen again to wear it all started. Debut albums don’t get much better than this one.
