You've probably heard about Sinead O'Connor's series of open letters to Miley Cyrus. You might have heard about the open letters from Amanda Palmer and other popular albeit lesser known musicians. Now, acclaimed singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has weighed in, instead of completing his promised 'album for every American state' project (he made it to two). This letter's a little different, though.
While earlier open letters have addressed Cyrus' provocative, sexualised new image, Stevens gets his opinion on that over and done with early. Referring to the Cyrus song #GetItRight and its accompanying video, Stevens says "great song, great message, great body". However, he has certain grammatical concerns with the song. Specifically, he's been frustrated by the line "I been laying in this bed all night long."
Mr. Stevens schools Cyrus on the line she should of used instead, explaining "Miley, technically speaking, you’ve been LYING, not LAYING, an irregular verb form that should only be used when there’s an object". He goes on to advise her to '#Get it Right the Next Time', and provides a crash course in the present perfect continuous tense. You can read it here.
Reception to the Stevens' open letter hasn't been unanimously positive - Vice Magazine released a list of grammatical errors from Stevens' post itself - but hopefully Stevens' amusing addition to the growing number of Miley Cyrus open letters will mark a definitive end to this very unusual trend.
