Toy Show The Musical went ahead without the written approval of the RTÉ board, a new report into the €2.2 million box office flop has found.
A report into the fiasco carried out by Grant Thornton is due to be published tomorrow morning.
It is expected to find that there was a lack of governance overseeing the venture – with the RTÉ board never formally approving the show.
RTÉ News is reporting that Grant Thornton has found that there was an obligation on the board to give the show its clearance before it went ahead; however, the board was never formally asked to do so.
On The Pat Kenny Show this morning, Irish Independent Ireland Editor Fionnan Sheehan set out the areas the report is expected to cover.
“It will basically look into how on Earth did RTÉ manage to lose €2.2 million of licence fee payers’ money on a show that ran without any due diligence, any checking, any safety net, seemingly, in place,” he said. “Nobody asking any basic questions around how much it was going to cost and what was the risk attached.”
The report is the latest to be commissioned in the wake of last year’s RTÉ payments scandal and the broadcaster’s failure to fully publish former presenter Ryan Tubridy’s wages.
In a statement, the RTÉ board said the report was now complete and had been furnished to the Media Minister Catherine Martin.
It said the report would be published as soon as possible.
