Manchester City set conversation around financial regulations alight today when it emerged that they are to be charged by the Premier League for numerous alleged breaches of financial rules.
Pat Nevin joined The Football Show this evening to shed some light on the situation, although he believes there’s still a ways to go until anyone will truly know what the consequences that might arise from this are.
“These will be complex things and anyone who says oh yeah I know what’s happening here, don’t believe them, because they don’t! There’s a lot of work to be done on this” he says.
“It’s strange when you get 100 alleged breaches and I’ve trolled through and there’s maybe one that I would kind of know about” the former Chelsea and Everton footballer continued.
Were the review to find the current Premier League title holders guilty, the question of comes next poses a variety of repercussions.
"If they are found guilty of some of the more extreme allegations you're talking about points deduction and we’ll deal with that as it comes, but there is a bigger question too” Nevin says.
“What about all of these people that are buying into the Premier League and putting the money into and thinking, well actually we might get done for that, we might get sued for that. That will have them thinking will they want to do that anymore or will they just bog off to Italy or Spain or somewhere" he adds.
“So the Premier league, well done them for doing this and being hopefully honest about it. It’s one of those ones that there seems to be a big gun out and they've just shot themselves in the foot"
