Alan Quinlan joined Friday's OTB AM to look ahead to an important weekend of Champions Cup action for the Irish sides.
Ulster host Ospreys in Belfast tonight needing a win to keep pace with Edinburgh in Conference B of the Guinness PRO14 as the season draws to a close.
"It's been a disastrous season so far for Ulster, on and off the field," Quinlan told Dave McIntyre. "Tonight, I think they need to get maximum points, bringing themselves to 56 and then they're three points behind Edinburgh. They hope that maybe Edinburgh lose a game or two - it's doable.
"It's been really, really poor. You think Les Kiss leaving then Jono Gibbs going at the end of the season and it's 2014 since they've been in the knock-out stages of Europe.
"There was a lot of promises and big statements, in particular in 2010 from their CEO, Shane Logan, saying that their goal was to be one of the top clubs in Europe.
"And, I've played so many times up in Ravenhill and The Kingspan and the Ulster people are unbelievably passionate and there's a demand and a similar expectation.
"They've great fans and there's a feeling that they've been perennial underachievers and it's a fact - they haven't won a trophy since 2006.
"And in that time you think, Ospreys have won the PRO12 three or four times, Glasgow, Connacht, Scarlets and you think - why haven't Ulster done that in 12 years?"
