Joey Carbery believes that Dan Carter taught him an invaluable lesson in leadership when they met in November last year. Speaking to Ger & Eoin on OTB:AM, Joey recalled his meeting with the Kiwi fly-half.
“When I was chatting to him initially it was just to get to know each other, but then talking to him he said he first came onto the scene he was a 12 playing outside Andrew Mehrtens and Carlos Spencer, and he said it was the best thing that ever happened for his development.”
Joey took away a couple of tips from Carter about how to best conduct one’s self in world rugby.
“He said one of the biggest things that he got from them was learning how to take responsibility and how to give authority. To hear that from him opened my eyes a bit to noticing how to use those skills. It’s a huge skill when you’re a ten to be able to give the right form of communication and give reassurance to the players around you, so hearing that from him gave me a lot of confidence. It shows that playing alongside Johnny [Sexton] will help me develop.”
