One of his Hibernian team-mates suffered abuse

The weekend just gone was a memorable one for Ireland's Daryl Horgan.

The former Dundalk winger was crucial for Hibernian as they beat Hearts 2-1 in the Edinburgh derby.

The Galway native scored twice, including a fine second strike to seal victory.

Horgan joined us on The Football Show tonight to fill us in on life since he left Preston last summer.

But he also touched on the issues of sectarianism in Scottish football and racism.

"We're past the Stone Ages"

"Any kind of discrimination is just not on, no matter what," he said.

"It's 2019 now. We're past the Stone Ages. One of the [Hibernian] lads there, I've just seen it on Sky Sports News, got racial abuse in the derby. It's a disgrace.

"It doesn't matter what creed, race or anything you are. You should never ever get that kind of abuse. It's not right and it's a disgrace that that's still the case going on.

"It's just wrong that someone who's just trying to enjoy his football and play a game is getting that kind of abuse."

However, sectarianism is something he has seen little of in Edinburgh.

"I haven't seen as much of the sectarianism," he said.

"I haven't heard too much of it when I'm playing. I don't hear much of what's going on."

There has been a growing debate about how to players and governing bodies should respond.

"It needs to be decided from the top down and then you need to have the sanctions," said Horgan.

"The sanctions have to be followed out to the letter. And hopefully that will stamp it out because it's just wrong.

"Is it the right thing to walk off the pitch? If that is the case, then yeah walk off the pitch. Finish the game behind closed-doors or something."
