Ex-Ireland defender discusses the weekend's Premier League

Gary Breen believes Unai Emery has been over-achieving with this Arsenal team.

The Gunners are in the mix for the Premier League Top 4. But their away form came back to bite them yet again at Goodison Park.

They only lost 1-0 at Everton but it could and should have been a more yawning gap.

Former Ireland defender Breen joined Joe Molloy and says a huge overhaul is needed.

"I've loved the work that Emery has done. More than anything, he's added a bit of organisation and a bit of discipline. But the old failings are there," he said.

Overhaul

"This group of players are not of the quality or level required. In terms of technical ability, yes. But in terms of mental strength, no. That's evident in the fact that they're so poor away from home - yet to keep a clean sheet all season.

"And yet going into this game, I just hoped they would have seized the initiative."

That was based on the fact that they were over-achieving.

"Ultimately, I believe that Arsenal are the sixth best team in the Premier League but Emery had got them to third. They had a real opportunity to cement that and once again those failings come back again," said Breen.

"Emery has inherited an unbalanced, ill-disciplined squad who are probably the most self-rewarding group of players you've ever seen in your life in terms of high-fiving each other when they're doing particularly well.

"They need a massive overhaul. There's a massive reboot needed at Arsenal. They need a massive reinvestment into that squad. They're not good enough to take Arsenal back where they need to be and that's challenging at the top end of the Premier League."

He also added that it's unlikely that Arsenal will be able to acquire ready-made talent this summer.

Breen also discusses Seamus Coleman's form as the Everton and Ireland full-back's form returns to near-peak levels.

And he also talked Liverpool's determined pursuit of the Premier League title after their 3-1 win at Southampton.
