By the time today comes to a close, it could be another special day for Irish rowing.

Last summer of course was magical with Gary and Paul O'Donovan's Olympic silver medals in the double sculls, while Paul added World Championship gold just weeks later in Rotterdam.

This afternoon onwards, three golds could be gained for Ireland at the World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida , which is where Gary O'Donovan joined Nathan and ex-World Championship gold medalist Niall O'Toole on the line from.

He won't be involved in today's action alongside Paul, explaining the reason why to Nathan.

"It was after the Lucerne World Cup, which is going back to July now, and then we raced the national championships the following week. We took a few days of rest and we headed back in for the block of training leading into the World Champs and as soon as we started training, I kind of got a bit of an illness. I got over that anyway and got back training for a few days, got sick again and it just kept recurring," he said.

"It kind of consumed four or five weeks and then by the time I got back to full health and full training, it was nearly six weeks, seven weeks almost. At that stage, we'd missed a bit of time in the doubles and it's essential that we're in the boat together.

"When we're completing for such small margins, we're only barely making finals and fairly scraping into the medals all year because of the nature of the event is so tight that to miss so much time - one, for me to miss the training and two, to spend the time out of the boat wasn't ideal and we kind of concluded at the end that for Paul to have the best chance he possibly could in his good health over the summer that he'd be better off to go for the World Championships in the single." 

But he added that he's not dwelling on it and is focused on future targets.
