John Giles has a scathing view of Manchester United's summer dealings.

Paul Pogba had made noises about wanting to move away but has remained at the club. Romelu Lukaku has also made a deadline day move to Inter Milan and the biggest signing has been Harry Maguire for £80 million.

John was back with us ahead of the new season, during our #OTB17 Deadline Day special.

He contrasted the lack of leadership at Manchester United with the time when Alex Ferguson called the shots.

"Who's making the decisions? Who's going to control it, who's going to lead them? Solskjaer's not doing it at the moment, that's for sure," he said.

"What's Solskjaer's position at the club? We know what Ferguson's was - a total dictator and he knew what he wanted got it in and got it finished."

No Control

He also added his belief that Solskjaer "isn't capable of doing that" in the same way.

"What they needed is someone like a Conte to come in," John added.

"What they need is a young Ferguson. But it's not there. I would've appointed Conte because I saw what he did at Chelsea. He won the cup and the league in two seasons. Some players didn't like him but tough.

"All the managers I came across, most of them definitely weren't loved."

He also turned to Solskjaer's public backing of Pogba. The ex-Man United midfielder feels the manager is mistaken and "not in control of the situation" at the club.

"If Solskjaer can't see that and he's the manager, he's in cuckoo land," he said.

"Could you imagine Ferguson dealing with Pogba, the way he's behaved himself?"

Overall, John is also unsure what to expect of Man United on the pitch as a result.

"Are [the new players] going to make a difference without being led?" he pondered.

"I can't see where Solskjaer has led the team in the summer in any way whatsoever. He's not in charge of the situation. He's been given the player, 'there you are and you make the most of what's going on".
