Ex-Chelsea and Everton winger on the sense of revolt against Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri has become just the latest Chelsea manager to edge closer to the exit door.

But what is unusual about the situation is the extent to which the match-going fans have openly turned.

Sarri-ball has become less effective of late with a 6-0 hammering against Manchester City and Monday's FA Cup exit versus Manchester United a case in point.

This weekend, they face City in the Carabao Cup final and there is a growing sense Sarri's tenure is on the rocks.

Ex-Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin gave us his perspective.

"At the [Man United] game I was taken aback as well," he said.

Quite unusual

"Because Chelsea fans generally don't do that. You remember what they were like with Conte in the final days. They didn't turn on the manager. They didn't even turn on Mourinho while at the ground.

"Yes, there were complaints on social media and online but when do you not get that? But at the grounds, it wasn't happening. Even at the Etihad in the 6-0 game, there was none of that at all.

"However, by half-time in the game against Manchester United, the frustration had boiled over and they were booed off the park. That really is quite unusual for the Chelsea fans. So when the Chelsea hierarchy say they were taken aback by it, they're not making that up. That's absolutely unusual. I think you have to go back to maybe AVB the last time that was heard at Stamford Bridge. They're not really like that, so that has a massive effect, very, very quickly. I think that's been building up for a while and it's frustration at a number of things."

Nevin feels the "lack of adaptability" is one area of frustration.
