Horse trainer Sheila Lavery was our special guest this week on Friday Night Racing.
Recently, AP McCoy finished first in the Pat Smullen Champions Race at The Curragh on the Sheila Lavery-trained Quizzical. The event was in aid of fundraising for cancer research, with the race featuring a host of legendary jockeys.
Lavery explained how she ended up with McCoy onboard Quizzical, saying that the "stars aligned".
Lady Kaya
Meanwhile, Lavery also reflected on the death of Lady Kaya following a broken leg.
"It's still very raw," Lavery explained of a previously durable filly.
"She was a filly and I'm not joking, I never brought her up to a vet because she never pulled out sore, never pulled out stiff. She was incredible and she was never sick.
"I think she was lame once apart from her cut as a foal. But she had a stone bruise and I think that was about it.
Lavery discussed the moment the injury became apparent.
"I saw her back leg up in the air and I just knew she was in trouble," she said.
"So I just ran straight down to her. She'd broken the bone just below the stifle in a hind leg. But it hadn't broken. It was like it had imploded."
