Wales’ head coach Warren Gatland says becoming the New Zealand head coach isn’t something that he is strategically planning.

The New Zealander didn’t rule out the possibility of becoming head coach in the future but says he understands there is a criteria, and process in place before being considered for the role. 

 The Welsh coach was speaking on Off the Ball roadshow, last Thursday.  

 “It’s never been in my way of thinking,” Gatland said.

The Hamilton native hinted that he could possibly return to New Zealand if his Welsh team performs well in the 2019 World Cup. He believes there is a process in place before being considered for the New Zealand head coaching position. Gatland says his primary focus at the moment is with the Welsh national team and he didn't rule out the possibility of making a play for the position in the future.

“If we do well in the World Cup; I’ll go back home. Maybe a Super rugby opportunity comes along! And then if you’re successful for a couple of years, something else might come along. I’m not planning.”

Gatland says success is key to being considered for the role. He believes doors open with successful stints in other roles. He is planning on a successful campaign with the Welsh rugby team at the 2019 World Cup.

“Those things happen as a result of what you’ve done in the process as you go along. If you do something, and you’re successful then other doors open.”
